$5.6 Million Settlement Reached In Helicopter Crash
A helicopter rotor blade manufacturer has agreed to a $5.6 million settlement with the family of a flight nurse who was killed in a helicopter crash in August 2008 near Indianapolis. Sandra Pearson and two others were killed in the crash that was caused by a flawed main rotor blade had broken apart just after take-off, the lawsuit claimed. The settlement money will go into trust accounts for Pearson’s young children until they turn 18.  John Murray, Indianapolis Star

I was saddened to hear of the loss of this flight nurse.  A malfunction of the rotor blade was felt to be responsible.  She was responsible for saving lives, yet lost hers.

Arkansas is home to Angel One which provides medical transport in a 200 nautical mile radius around our capitol city.  My friend, Cindy, is one of the esteemed team members.  Cindy is part of the medical team and is a flight nurse as was Ms. Pederson.  She participates in transport of critically ill infants, children and adults to and from ACH (Arkansas Children’s Hospital) or UAMS (University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences).

Flight nurses with Angel One are trained in ACLS, PALS, neonatal resuscitation, pediatric and neonatal intensive care as well as advanced trauma and transport services.  You may have seen some of their work on 19 Kids and Counting when the Duggar’s 19th child, Josie, was flown from UAMS to Children’s to receive ongoing neonatal treatment.

I am proud of our Angel One service.  They have a difficult job which can involve multiple flights per day.  To read about a day in the life of Angel One, check out this page.  It will make you appreciate your job and it will also have you thanking these men and women who put their lives on the line to give us ours back.

UAMS Seeks Stroke Patients for Study on Preventing Falls

LITTLE ROCK — The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) has expanded its stroke research efforts with a $100,000 federal grant that focuses on helping stroke survivors avoid future injuries due to falls by studying strength and balance.

 

Funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the two-year pilot study is led by UAMS’ Mark Mennemeier, Ph.D., an associate professor of neurobiology and developmental sciences.

 

Because alertness appears to play a role in strength and balance perception, Mennemeier will try to identify therapies that can improve alertness. The study will include up to 55 participants – people who have had a stroke affecting one side of the body and people who have not had a stroke but want to participate as a control subject. Potential study participants may call 501-526-7773 to learn more.

 

The pilot study examines how changes in alertness after stroke influence perception of strength and balance. Falls in the hospital and at home are related in part to misperception of strength and balance. Problems can persist months and years after stroke. The long-term goal of the study is to improve stroke rehabilitation and to prevent injury by treating problems of alertness.

 

UAMS’ stroke research includes a new telemedicine program that provides life-saving stroke treatment from neurology specialists who can communicate with rural hospitals using real-time two-way video. UAMS also is leading a four-year NIH study that will help determine the best procedure for preventing strokes caused by blocked arteries in the neck: stents or surgical removal of the artery clogging plaque.

 

Mennemeier’s research compliments these projects by focusing on rehabilitation and recovery. He is preparing for the start of another NIH-funded study later this year that uses an approved medication to treat problems with alertness after stroke.

 

Stroke affects 700,000 people annually in the United States. As many as half of these patients may have misperception of their arm and leg strength. Up to one third of all stroke patients may fall during or following stroke rehabilitation.

With the largest generation of Americans entering the latter stages of life coupled with our longer life expectancy, it is crucial that patient care is readily available. The Donald W. Reynolds Foundation has just announced that it has received grants totalling $33.4 million for the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences’ (UAMS) Donald W. Reynolds Institute on Aging. The grants will be used to build four floors (55,000 square feet) at the facility as well as $3 million toward care giver training program that will be instituted at the regional centers in Texarkana, Pine Bluff, Jonesboro, and West Memphis.

UAMS provides several senior health services. The Donald W. Reynolds Institute on Aging has a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach to the treatment of Arkansas seniors. The Longevity Clinic is one of the south’s largest primary care clinics specifically for seniors. U.S. News & World Report named the UAMS Department of Geriatrics to their top ten list for graduate programs for the past seven years. Other senior services include the Eye Institute, the Cancer Institute and the Myeloma Institute.
