Forensic Nurses Working in the Legal Field

12 February 2010 18 views No Comment

Legal nurse consultants work in a variety of fields.  Typically nurses get interested in this exciting field after being targeted by mass marketing efforts from for-profit centers touting “certification.”  Nurses typically work at the bedside and consult on the side for the legal environment, but some nurses find themselves in the midst of the legal environment while at the bedside.

Forensic nursing is one such area.  The very definition of forensic science is utilizing science to answer questions of the legal system.  We typically use the word “forensic” in reference to a crime.  The most common forensic nurse is a SANE or Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner.  It was a group of such nurses that in 1992 came together for a conference and soon developed the International Association of Forensic Nurses (IAFN).

An article entitled Nurses’ Supporting Role in Law and Order provides additional information about the role of the legal nurse consultant working in forensic science.  The University of Tennessee is now offering a doctorate level program.  Secondary to this new program, VP Medical Consulting will be able to provide additional forensic nursing services in the future.  Several certificate programs currently exist, but this is the only doctorate level program of which I am aware.
