New Disability Resources

I recently happened across a website associated with the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication.  It included a bunch of resources from the National Center on Disability & Journalism.  I am including many of them here that would be beneficial for legal nurse consultants, life care planners, and case managers.  A few of them may be repeats, but worth sharing again.

Abledbody
News and insights on assistive technologies and innovations for people with disabilities. It also covers disability-related news, including politics, business, education and culture as it relates to helping people with disabilities become more abled in the workplace and lifespace.

Maintained by Anthony Tusler, this is an annotated bibliography of books organized by categories such as disability studies; family, children and relationship; history; and policy/civil rights. There are separate categories for radio, movies, the Web, publications and videos. The list is a compilation of recommendations from a diverse group of disability scholars and activists.

Accessibility Guidelines for Transportation Vehicles
This site provides details of the American with Disabilities Act rules and regulations regarding vehicles ranging from vans to mass transit.

Center for Research on Women with Disabilities
CROWD is a research center at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston that focuses on issues related to health, aging, civil rights, abuse and independent living for women with disabilities. The violence section includes information ranging from academic papers to a resource kit.

Dart Center On-line Curriculum: Journalism & Traumatic Stress
This site provides best practices, self-study units and other resources on reporting on trauma and emotional injury.

Disability Statistics Center at the University of California at San Francisco
The center produces and disseminates statistical information on the demographics and status of people with disabilities. Topics include employment, access to technology, health care, community-based services and other aspects of independent living and participation in society.

Federal Transit Administration Office of Civil Rights
The FTA Office of Civil Rights is responsible for civil rights compliance and monitoring to ensure that discrimination does take place in public transit services. This site includes compliance reports, guides on disability law and federal bulletins.

Independent Living Research Utilization
The ILRU program is a national center for information, training, research and technical assistance in independent living. It is a program of the Institute for Rehabilitation and Research, a nationally recognized medical rehabilitation facility for persons with disabilities. Local independent living centers in each state can be found in an online directory.

Institute for Community Inclusion: State Data Online
This Web site generates customized charts of state, national and individual disability data. Accessible text versions are automatically created by the charting software. Data includes state mental retardation/developmental disabilities agencies, the Rehabilitation Services Administration, the Social Security Administration and the U.S. Department of Labor.

Media & Disability Links
Journalism Professor Beth Haller provides links to news, blogs, publications and studies related to disability.

Minnesota Center Against Violence and Abuse, Disabilities and Violence
This electronic clearinghouse on violence and abuse includes a section on disability with articles and fact sheets, books and videos and references to institutions and organizations.

National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research
This InfoUse project provides dozens of charts and graphs that measure disability in the United States.

National Organization on Disability
This site provides Harris poll data on the participation gaps between Americans with and without disabilities in 10 major life activities as well as an assortment of other disability-related surveys and studies.

National Rehabilitation Information Center (NARIC)
This site provides extensive materials on disability and rehabilitation-oriented information, including full-text documents, targeted bibliographies, historical data and resources for employment, advocacy, education, benefits and technology.

Trace Research and Development Center
This center at the University of Wisconsin-Madison provides information and research on voting accessibility, including assistive voting.

U.S. Census 2000
This site provides the U.S. Census Bureau’s most recent reports, briefs and data on disability.

U.S. Census Bureau News
The number of Americans with a disability reaches 54.4 million.

U.S. Department of Education, Office of Special Education and Rehabilitation
This Web site offers information on grants, educational resources, research and statistics in the areas of special education and vocational rehabilitation.

Women with Disabilities
This Web site includes archived papers, articles and reports as well as links to disability sites and recommendations for further reading.
