Medical Device Patient Lobby Day
March 31, 2009 is Medical Device Patient Lobby Day in Washington, DC. Attorney Tom Lamb shared in his blog that the Campaign to Stop Corporate Immunity (CSCI) group is arranging for patients injured by defective medical devices to let our Representatives and Senators see why they should vote in support of the Medical Device Safety Act.
Just this week, lawmakers criticized a Colorado company that oversees medical trials after an undercover investigation revealed that it had approved a study for a fictitious medical device. Criticism of Coast Independent Review Board comes as regulators and safety advocates have raised concerns about a review system that is vulnerable to manipulation. According to this New York Times article, the data presented to the House Energy and Commerce Committee’s oversight and investigations subcommittee, Coast had rejected only one study in the past five years of of 356 proposals. However, the company’s revenue has more than doubled.
