According to researchers at George Mason University and the Urban Institute, uninsured Americans will pay $30 billion for health care in 2008, and they will receive $56 billion of free care, mostly in the form of government programs. The study, published in the journal Health Affairs, also found that insured Americans receive more care and pay for less of it out of pocket than do uninsured Americans. The researchers conclude that if more people had health insurance, they would spend more on health care. Maggie Fox, Yahoo News 08/25/2008 |
On average, an uninsured American pays $583 out of pocket toward average annual medical costs of $1,686 per person, Hadley’s team reported in the journal Health Affairs. The annual medical costs of Americans with private insurance average far more — $3,915, with $681, or 17 percent, paid out of pocket, the report found.
As a self-employed individual I pay enormous costs for almost no health coverage. My deductible is $5000 and the plan covers very little. The uninsured get government assistance for medications, costs for office visits, and if they are hospitalized they get the UR department of the hospital to apply for assistance for them. They do not even have to complete the paperwork required to get the assistance. The system is broken. This issue in the election will help secure my vote. I refuse socialized medicine.
