Recent research and anecdotal reports suggest that patients increasingly distrust their doctors. According to a study conducted by Johns Hopkins researchers, approximately a quarter of patients feel that doctors may expose them to unnecessary risk. A Nevada court has extended workers compensation benefits to the families of workers who commit suicide following an industrial accident. The Supreme Court has ruled that benefits may be payable if an on-the-job injury led to the rational impairment that resulted in suicide. The ruling revives a claim filed by the widow of a man who shot himself after suffering a severe back injury at work.

Nearly 50,000 plaintiffs will begin receiving checks next month from Merck & Co. as part of a $4.85 billion settlement over the recalled painkiller Vioxx. More than 97 percent of eligible claimants have enrolled in the settlement program, according to the drug maker. At least 250 pending Vioxx-related class-action lawsuits have yet to be resolved.
